Abstract

Experiments conducted in large scientific research infrastructures like free-electron lasers become increasingly intricate due to the complex physical systems, which they are designed to investigate. Under strict time limitations and depending critically on experimental parameters, such experiments are demanded to reach the most optimal parameters for the specific sample/condition under investigation as soon as possible. Realistic simulations provide a solution to estimate the best parameters before the experiments and help analyze the experiment results to increase experiment efficiency. The SIMEX platform is a start-to-end simulation platform for the simulation of experiments at advanced laser and X-ray light sources. It provides a complete set of tools simulating the X-ray from the source to the detector. SimEx is the python API of the SIMEX platform. It brings all aspects of typical experiments at light source infrastructures into a simulation workflow. However, the SimEx API was developed and released within a cumbersome package. The difficulty of maintaining and usage, including the low incomplete data exchange framework, drives us to develop a lightweight version: SimEx-Lite based on the libpyvinyl4 package to provide better sustainability and user experience.
