Abstract

The Sample Environment & Characterization group (SEC) provides state-of-the-art sample delivery systems to the scientific instruments of the European XFEL and user support in sample preparation, characterization and delivery. One branch of SEC is especially dedicated to the injection of liquid samples for serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) and single-particle imaging (SPI). An important sample environment for SFX are free liquid jets. Gas dynamic virtual nozzles (GDVN) use an outer stream of helium gas to further compress a liquid jet down to a few micrometer diameter. For rapid prototyping of various nozzles geometries and materials, a sub-micrometer precision 3D printer (Nanoscribe PP GT2) is used. Here, we present our current pool of 3D printed liquid sample environments which encompass GDVNs, micromixers, mixing GDVNs, high viscosity extruders (HVE) and electrospray capillary tips (ECT) with highly-reproducible geometric features that are suitable for time-resolved SFX as well as SPI experiments at XFEL facilities.
