The XFEL Biology Infrastructure (XBI) is a biological laboratory for sample preparation, handling, testing and characterization which is located in the headquarters of the European XFEL above the SPB/SFX instrument. The XBI was created by the XBI User Consortium for the users of the European XFEL as an in-kind contribution. The XBI User Consortium constructed, commissioned and led the operation of XBI biolab until the end of 2019. Starting from beginning of 2020 the XBI laboratory has been transferred to the European XFEL GmbH. The XBI biolab offers users state of the art equipment and support users in all steps from expression through purification, biophysical characterization, and crystallization up to and including sample delivery of both crystalline and non-crystalline samples of a wide range of biological systems at the instruments of the European XFEL.
