Abstract

Chemical sensitivity of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAS) is routinely used to determine electronic structure of compounds at synchrotrons. Extending XAS to ultrashort, femtosecond timescales allows for revealing the dynamics of microscopic phenomena in complex materials by addressing electronic excitations and their relaxation to other degrees of freedom such as lattice distortion. XAS at SASE FEL requires an adequate normalization scheme to detect small transients. For this, UP 2170 (PI: M. Beye) and UP 2170 (PI: A. Eschenlohr) open community proposals were focused on establishing sensitive photon shot-noise limited XAS at SCS with a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate scheme.
