Abstract

When the European XFEL begins its operational phase, its experimental hall will house six radiation-shielded and interlocked experimental hutches and three optics hutches. This requires careful coordination and planning to ensure all appropriate safety measures are in place for the giving operating conditions which include hard and soft X-rays as well as powerful class IV lasers capable of producing ionizing radiation. We will report on our efforts to develop a safety concept that includes integration of the personnel safety systems, emergency off concept, and administrative controls to accommodate radiation protection within these areas. The report will include the shielding plan and how all radiation protection measures taken will ensure that radiation levels will be kept below 1 mSv per year.
