Abstract

The Sample Environment and Characterization (SEC) group of EuXFEL provides sample delivery methods for all seven scientific instruments of the EuXFEL. The predominant sample delivery method for MHz repetition rate are fast liquid jets of low viscosity media. A common method at the EuXFEL is Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SFX). Here, a suspension of protein crystals is prepared in a fast liquid jet of several micrometres diameter by means of a Gas Dynamic Virtual Nozzle (GDVN) device. For hard X-ray fluorescence and absorption measurements, Rayleigh jets with diameters in the order of 50 µm are used. Because of the high flow rates, these jets are operated in a sample recovering setup. Soft Xray absorption requires very thin flat samples. For these experiments, we explore microscopic flat sheet jets.
